The marvellous Shy FX released 'Raver' quite some time ago but just recently, the whole release has been made available for free.

The video for 'Raver' features a bewildering number of cameos ranging from AC Slater to Peter Waterman. It's almost a game in itself, spotting people. The tune itself features Kano, Donae'o and Roses Gabor (of Gorillaz fame) as well as a whole host of remixes from the likes of Breakage, Benny Page and the mighty MJ Cole.

New Starkey EP on Civil Music

Philadelphia resident Starkey has a new EP out on Civil Music label. The 12 track release — 5 originals, 6 remixes and one narration track — is as expansive as it is ambitious. It harks back to his IDM roots with a science fiction-inspired spoken word track as well as sprawling soundscapes and cold bleeps.

It also comes with a pretty solid bunch of remixes, with Ital Tek and Rudi Zygadlo’s remixes of 'Playing With Fire' and 'Paradise' respectively outshining the others. Grab a copy of it at 7digital.

New Jason Forrest EP absolutely free!

Berlin resident Jason Forrest has released a brand new EP under his own name, the first in six years. The new EP, entitled 'Utopia' is a noise-driven beast with more than a penchant for melody.

The new EP was born from a meeting between Forrest and Brian Miller (head of the LA-based Deathbomb Arc) when they discussed the possibility of him contributing to the Deathbomb Arc digital singles club. Instead, Jason opted to release a full four-track EP ahead of the full-length LP scheduled for 2011.

The release is a departure from his recent club-friendly bass productions. It marks a return to the more leftfield, intricate productions he cut his teeth on 6+ years ago. It's epic stuff, featuring uptempo melodies that build gradually to distorted peaks and troughs with eerie synth lines.

There's still an element of his beloved prog rock and even hints at disco, progressing the sort of sounds used in 2004's 'Shamelessly Exciting'. Preview the first track from the EP, 'Ciccone Youth', below and then download the whole thing free here.

Gorillaz cover The XX in live Radio 1 set with Daley

Damon Albarn's current project, Gorillaz, performed at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge over the weekend, accompanied by singer Daley. They performed very low-key versions of their new single 'Doncamatic' as well as 'Melancholy Hill', as well as a stunning cover of The XX's 'Crystalised'. I've always loved Droon since he was making nasty, harsh as hell breakcore/mashups. I mean, anyone who's heard Cripplefight knows this is one hugely entertaining producer.

Sadly, with the demise of breakcore a lot of these sort of productions fell out of favour as DJs started making cleaner, more pronounced house and bass music. Most DJs either jumped ship and started on electro or they simply sank into obscurity. Sadly, Droon kinda falls into both categories.

I did however, find this little beauty of his which blends the best of both: b'more and electro with a breakcore sensibility. Dusty mix from the top shelf. expiration date 12-2007 by Droon

Sufjan Stevens tribute LP due for March release

A tribute LP to Sufjan Stevens, will be released via the blog On Joyful Wings in aid of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The LP, 'Seven Swans Reimagined', is a track-by-track re-working of Stevens' 2004 album 'Seven Swans'.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy heads the bill along with DM Stith, Half-Handed Cloud, and the Gregory Brothers. Apparently, Sufjan was not involved in the project but gives it his full blessing.

To celebrate our first birthday we asked two of our favourite DJs, BD1982 and Jubilee, to put together a mix each so we could release them both instead of the usual once-a-month deal. We put Brian's mix out two weeks ago and now it's Jess's turn.

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jubilee has been a staple of the heavy bass scene for some time now. As well as running Nightshifters alongside Donna Summer, she also puts on the Flashing Lights parties with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres.

New Sharam Jey single with Tommie Sunshine

Debut release from Talk on Nightshifters

One of the most recent signings to Nightshifters, Talk, has released his first EP on the imprint. The new EP, entitled 'Holy Mountain', came out yesterday and promises a sound described as "cinematic" and "gutteral".

As always, Nightshifters have brought out the dark and dirty side of their musicians. I know we've featured most of the NS releases on here but it's simply because they're consistantly solid. It's really impressive the way Jason Forrest and Jubilee have created this label: the striking visual aesthetics and the thoughtfully selected artists combine to inspire their DJs to create genuinely unique productions.

This month Kick Out The Jam celebrates its first birthday and to celebrate we've got two - yes, two - mixtapes for you lovely shits. The first is from our good friend BD1982 and the second is from Nightshifters co-big cheese, Jubilee.

Episode six of our podcast series comes from Yokohama resident BD1982. Including Makumba Sound, Roska, XLII and Untold; it also features a couple of BD1982 originals, as well as his remix of 'Mommy' by Planet Soap.

The tape kicks off with an awesome blend of samples before throwing us headlong into a dubby dancehall number. It ties in all my favourite styles of tropical, funky, dancehall, dubstep and house into this really awesome dark trip that almost delves into the realms of IDM at points.

New Zed Bias LP due in Spring 2011

Master of the breaks/garage sound Zed Bias has announced he will be releasing a new album this Spring on Tru Thoughts, titled 'Biasonic Hot Sauce'.

Following the succes of 'Make A Change' under his Maddslinky moniker, the new LP promises brand new Zed Bias material as well as collaborations with Skream and Mark Pritchard among others. There's little more info other than that the artwork will be daubed by Boo Cook, whose CV includes work for Marvel Comics!

BD1982 - Trails

Having cut his teeth back in Philadelphia, Brian "BD1982" Durr now resides in Japan. Slowly the influence of funky is starting to creep across the east coast of America, with more and more producers bridging the gap between dubstep and funky and so it reaches Brian via his pals in Philadelphia and so on.

The real star of the show is 'Magnets On My Back' with tropical drums and a Nintendo-y synth line. Always keeping his productions progressive and as far from monotonous as it's possible to get.

Gunhead makes 'Trails' into a sort of "tropical n' bass" with ravey synth lines over a heavy Tropical/UKF beat. The Jam City mix is much more of a garage/bassline affair that could just as easily be an L-Vis 1990 or A1 Bassline production, which is no bad thing (or a surprise given Jam City's work with the Night Slugs crew). The chilled out techno element gives it a real deep house edge and once more blurs the lines beyond all Venn Diagrams.

Finally we have the remixes of 'Let's Talk Math'. The first, a remix by Makumba Sound, also takes on a funky element with a very squelchy synth line splashing its way through things. The second mix and final mix is by a chap called Brey who has so far eluded our radars but this mix promises a lot and we're sure to hear from him again.

Britain's own Joe Flory aka Primary 1, whose career trajectory could only be described as "break-neck" has a new single 'Never Know' out December 6th. The new single is taken from his debut LP which features co-production from Paul Epworth and Phillpe Zdar and is scheduled for a February 2011 release.

If you heard 'Hold Me Down' you'll know this a release to get excited about and one that's sure to set the benchmark for releases in the new year. He already commands an impressive remix roster having Foamo, The Shoes and Yuksek penning reworkings in the past and Gucci Vump providing their take on the new single.

5 new tracks from the latest Horsepower LP at FACT

Those lovely chaps at FACT magazine have uploaded five whole tracks from the highly anticipated new LP by Horsepower Productions, their first in six years. The new album is to be released on the thoroughly consistant Tempa and promises at least as much as can be expected from such a ball-achingly good label.

With such a phenomenal track record, Tempa's reputation needs little explanation or promotion from me. Having put out Skream's debut LP as well as Benga's 'Diary Of An Afro Warrior', their reputation is a formidable one to say the least.

With that in mind, all signs point to 'Quest For The Sonic Bounty' being a stellar release, particularly since many consider them to be the inventors of dubstep. It may also be the last dubstep release to be described as such. Though I'll almost certainly be proved wrong before the year is out.

Trentemøller - Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go! [Video]

Widely regarded for his live performances - a quality sorely lacking in some of today's youngsters - Trentemøller should really be a lot bigger than he is. With a stage show that makes Lady GaGa look like a drag act in a working men's club in Dagenham.

Above all, however, is his inclusion of a theremin player - every nerdy electronica fan's wet dream as well as a live drummer. But apart from anything else his music is just ruddy good stuff.

Below you can watch the official video for 'Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!' (from his latest LP 'Into the Great Wide Yonder'), a live performance at the Roskilde Festival in front of 50,000+ fans who I'm supposedly "appear to be floating".

Night Slugs to release first anniversary comp

For a record label that's barely a year old Night Slugs has already amassed an impressive back catalogue of stand out releases in the heavy bass/UK funky scenes: Lil Silva's 'Night Skanker' EP, Mosca's 'Square One' and 'Wut' by Girl Unit to name but a few.

Kevin "The Bug" Martin has been a busy boy recently with the new King Midas Sound single 'Lost' and now a new EP under his Bug alias. The new EP, entitled 'The Infected', ia out on Ninja Tune on November 22nd.

New A-Trak tune on Fool's Gold!

Canadian boy wonder A-Trak (Kanye West's former tour DJ) has returned with a new tune 'Ray Ban Vision' with Kanye's new protégé CyHi Da Prynce. The track is to be released on the Fool's Gold Vol. 1, the debut compilation on Fool's Gold, on October 25.

While A-Trak's focus lays mainly within the field of electro/bass/house these days, he does have more than his fair share of hip-hop credentials, having won the DMC championships at the tender age of 15. The duo will be performing at the Fool's Gold third anniversary party which will be a part of Pitchfork's Offline Festival at Brooklyn Bowl, October 23.

New Roska and Untold collaboration

UKF pioneers Untold and Roska are set to release their first EP together on the highly-acclaimed Numbers label. Having danced around one creatively another with various remixes and shows, the two producers have finally decided to throw caution to the wind and make beautiful music together.

When asked why neither producer had selected their own imprints (Roska's Kicks And Snares and Untold's Hemlock), they explained that it made more sense for the two to meet in the middle so as to keep things on a level pegging.

The new EP is called 'Myth' and is available from Bleep, Boomkat, Clone, iTunes, Juno, Red Eye, Rub A Dub and Sounds Of The Universe.

DJ Aaron-Carl loses battle with cancer

It seems the current onslaught of rain and the recent departure of Mary Anne Hobbs from Radio 1 are not the only grim elements in our collective conscious. Yes, three certainly is the magic number as far as misery is concerned as news reaches us of the death of the genuinely legendary Aaron-Carl (nee Aaron-Carl Ragland).

After a well-publicised struggle with cancer Ragland passed away, despite posts on his Facebook and Twitter remaining positive to the last regarding his diagnosis and treatment. A quick scan of the internet reveals a mass of producers, journalists, DJs and fans alike mourning this loss on a personal level.

In a career spanning two decades, Aaron honed and advanced the Detroit house sound in a way that no other DJ could. While the Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May) developed the sound in its infancy, it was Aaron-Carl who nurtured the scene and essentially bank-rolled labels such as Mahogani, Ovum, Underground Resistance/Soul City and his own Wallshaker Music imprint.

Mary Anne Hobbs to quit radio

Some sad news on these shores: Mary Anne Hobbs has hosted her last edition of the BBC Radio 1 Experimental Show (formerly the Breezeblock Show) after 14 years. It seems the show will continue without her but it's a collossal understatement to say she'll be sorely missed, not just by the music world, but also by the artists she supported.

She has left the show and radio altogether to become the Media Development Coordinator at Sheffield University. It's no secret the part Hobbs played in the breaking of countless artists: pretty much every dubstep artist you've ever heard of; perhaps most notably Kode9 and Burial, the creators of the mix posted below.

New Mumdance EP

Kastle - Better Off Alone

The artist formerly known as B.Rich has set himself up for a promising year with this instant classic. Barrett "Kastle" Richards has taken on a dubbier sound with an almost housey edge to it.

It used to be that the UK had the monopoly on bass, but recently America, mainly the east coast, has started to take over. Artists such as Drop The Lime, AC Slater, Udachi and of course B.Rich stormed the scene with massive bass-heavy "choons" and "club-bangers".

Naturally, it seems appropriate to post a track featuring two of the biggest names in US bass: Kastle and Udachi. The original is a very mellow bassy piece reminiscent of Burial with a house twist. Now I have to warn you it does feature auto-tune. Luckily, it manages to pull it off by exercising some restraint and it does make it sound like it's underwater, which kinda fits.

Starkey adds a nice ravey horn-through-a-buzzsaw line to bang it up but it's Udachi's Funky mix that does it for me with the most awesome drum samples I've ever heard. Honestly, if you're not sure about Funky listen to this tune. A lot. Then listen to Willy Joy's Funky/soca mix or I'll slap your knees.

Under his B.Rich moniker it was more fast heavy bass drops and ghetto/hip-hop samples but with Kastle his productions have taken on a much dubbier, techy sound - lots of arpeggiated synths and handclaps. Definitely the beginning of big things for this chap.

New King Midas Sound 7" on Hyperdub

London natives King Midas Sound are to release their new single on Kode9,'s imprint Hyperdub. The release, which XLR8R described as "soulful and lovelorn", comes out on September 7. The b-side is the equally haunting b-side 'Frequencies'.

King Midas Sound is a dubstep project of Kevin "The Bug" Martin and London & Trinidad poet Roger Robinson featuring vocalist Hitomi. Having released their first 12" release 'Cool Out' and debut album 'Waiting For You' Hyperdub.

Under this guise Martin's music takes on a more Bristol-inspired sound as the ragga element takes a backseat. It's a more thoughtful endeavour and certainly one worth checking out for those lazy summer days in the park with cans of fizzy whatnot.

Last week I told you about the new free Hostage EP. Today I bring news about the latest Alan Parley project (not to be confused with The Alan Parsons Project). His new guise Wira is a departure from the usual Hostage territory and is to be released via the brand new label Phuturelabs (brought to you by the guys behind Nerve Recordings).

This new persona has only really been described as an "elusive" producer from the UK, though with Alan Parley's picture on the Facebook page the mystery begins and ends there.

The A-side is a track called 'Vloeitjes'; a slow-paced, a low-frequency piece full of dramatic tension with an unexpected bounce for such dance music. The whole package will be available in glorious 320 from the Phuturelabs website on September 13. In the mean time you can grab another tune of his 'Animals' below.

Another exciting podcast comes to us from Philadelphia resident Gair "Dev79" Marking. Starkey and he control Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey with El Carnicero.

Dev79 has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. I first heard his music back in the days when he was producing harsh noise-influenced hip-hop and breaks on the Sonic Terror imprint. Today his music retains the hip-hop and glitch influences along with a new dub and heavy bass streak.

His recent remixes for Gobs The Zombie, Guttstar, Dmn Days are sure to raise his profile and jettison him into the stratosphere. I'm told he's currently working on a collaborative EP with Seattle producer Thrills (of Sub Philo Music/Thrills & Tony Rocky Horror fame) with a new EP out on Seclusiasis called 'Live N Die 4 The Street Bass', coming in September.

New Kanji Kinetic EP 'Thrill Seeka'

Kanji Kinetic has released an EP on Chrissy Murderbot's label Sleazetone. The release promises to be the biggest for the label so far, with remixes coming from Krazy Fiesta (of Trunkfunk/Turboweekend fame) and upcoming bass or, to coin a wanky term, "post-garage" superstar Kingdom (Night Slugs, Fool’s Gold, Mad Decent, Acéphale).

Rockabilly is apparently the way forward according to Diplo and Drop The Lime. Recently Drop The Lime announced the formation of a new band: Bad Lupo Grande (that's Big Bad Wolf to you).

The first single 'Rockabilly Fever' comes out on August 17th on of Scion. Not sure even with Luca’s backing if rockabilly will really take off but it's an interesting effort at a time when everyone seems to be playing it pretty safe. Leave it to Drop The Lime to shake things up, keep things wild, and show off some well-versed creativity.

Daft Punk to score Tron Legacy soundtrack

News of the new Tron movie, or rather its soundtrack, has spilled all over the internet like a burst Um Bongo and as such mp3s are magically available for your aural pleasure. Sexy.

The soundtrack is being made by Daft Punk for those buggers at Disney for the sequel to the 1982 film where a guy gets kidnapped into a computer and has to do loads of challenges to get out and is helped by some trusty anti-virus software or something. Frankly I'm staggered it was ever made, but that was the 80s and they did things differently back then.

In fairness the music is amazing and these two tracks both feature prominently in the trailers. I can't honestly say if I'll actually go to see the film but I'm a big Daft Punk fan and I'm still enjoying the soundtrack.

Starkey featured on Radio 1's "Building The Beat"

Philadelphia's very own Starkey has been featured on Mary Anne Hobbs's new segment "Building The Beat". Basically, she challenges producers to write and record a track completely from scratch using samples contributed by Radio 1 DJs, artists and listeners. Oh, and they have to do it all in just 2 hours during a live show recorded at BBC Maida Vaile.

He was joined by vocalist Anneka and percussionist and dubstep producer Reso to build the ultimate dubstep track, all within the confines of a two hour show. Download the results below and check out the pics on the Radio 1 website as the track unfolds.

New Major Lazer EP!

The "Gorillaz of dancehall" as nobody is calling them, Major Lazer have a new EP out at the end of next month on Mad Decent called 'Lazers Never Die'.

The EP features two new tracks as well as remixes of tunes from their album by Buraka Som Sistema, Kicks Like A Mule and, believe it or not, Thom Yorke. The new release also features the vocal talents of MIA, Busy Signal, Lindi Ortega and the legendary Collie Buddz.

Bong-Ra - Monster

Just when I was getting worried Enduser was the only one still making breakcore, so Jason "Bong-Ra" Kohnen knocks me on my arse with embarrassment.

Sitting at the more focused end of the breakcore spectrum, alongside End and Jason Forrest, Bong-Ra's new EP is a breath of fresh air. The aptly-titled 'Monster' incorporates drum and bass, dub, breakcore and electro into a fast and heavy whirlwind of live instrumentation and programmed kicks and snares.

The first track 'Behemoth' does exactly what it says on the tin, smashing you square in the trousers with a straightforward ballbreaking wobbly bassline to break up all those loud, nasty snares. If you were a fan of his old productions you'll enjoy this and you will take note of the step up in production quality. Not that his production was ever poor, but the sound seems cleaner and more focused.

The second track 'Cyclops' is a more considered affair, using a playful string section to add a sinister veneer, bringing to mind Venetian Snares' masterpiece 'Rossz Csillag Alatt Született' and even Mr. Bungle. Once again, Bong-Ra demonstrates his ability to chop and change between styles with the minimum of fuss, whilst still retaining a unifying structure within his records.

New Toddla T track!

Hailing from Sheffield or "da steel city", Toddla T finally delivers a new original track, featuring the hugely fun vocal talents of Jamaican legend Wayne Marshall. Though he's been busy hosting his radio show, remixing, creating mixes and pretty much everything aside from recording he's finally back.

Here's the story of how the collaboration came about according to Toddla's website:

"On a recent trip to Jamaica to collaborate with Major Lazer, Mr T found himself alone in the legendary Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston. Who should wander in but the one-and-only Wayne Marshall who asked Toddla to play him some riddims. As soon as he heard the beat which would become 'Sky Surfing' the rest was history!"

Though I'm not a fan of auto-tuned vocals, Mr. T keeps it tasteful and manages not to overuse the effect; a notion lost on a lot of today's producers, particularly in the funky scene. Coupled with the wobbly bassline it actually works pretty well and earns itself a place in the tiny arena of "funky tunes I don't hate".

Head honcho of Generation Bass, Sonido Del Principe has been most people's window to the world of cumbia, kuduro and pretty much all non-western music for the past couple of years. Their persistence in uncovering lost gems and relative unknowns has made the GB crew one of the more impressive bloggers.

So in light of that sycophancy, Sonido Del Principe has kindly contributed a mix of his favourite beats and pieces. Drawing together elements of cumbia, baile funk, kuduro, hip hop, bassline, dancehall and grime; this upsettingly good mix features everything from 2Pac to Neil Landstrumm.

This wasn't going to be the next episode of the series but with summer's being what they are I just had to post it before the sun went away and all the pretty ladies starting wearing their thick duffel coats again. That, I will not stand for.

Literally, all I know about this chap is he's from Gainesville and his name may or may not be Dick. It's most likely David.

The first track, a remix of 'Superfuzz' by St. Beethoven, is currently featured in the top 15 of Soundcloud's hot list. The second track is an awesome funky mash-up of two songs I have never ever heard but now love more than anything, with one sampling 'Incense & Peppermints' by Strawberry Alarm Clock to devastating effect.

New Spiritualized LP on its way!

Spiritualized are set to release a new LP in the very near future; maybe this year, maybe not - or as Jason Pierce puts it, "when it's done".

The new album is the follow-up to 2008′s 'Songs In A&E' and is said to draw influence directly from 1997's classic 'Ladies And Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space'.

Spiritualized's Pierce told The Quietus it’s very weird to lay out something you did 12 years ago in all its complexity and then get inside it enough to be able to play it live, and not have that get into some of the newer stuff we’re doing."

Our good Belgian friend Sickboy of the infamous Breakcore Gives Me Wood parties and Servants Of The Apocalyptic Goat Rave has kindly put together the weirdest mixtape we're likely to have for the series! And all this in time for his European tour with Captain Ahab and DJ Skull Vomit.

Having released music on Tigerbeat6, Peace Off, Mirex and Wood, Sickboy's productions bring heaviness and excitement to every single production. His distinctive style has been ripping pop culture for nearly 10 years now, using samples rhythmically as part of a greater whole - rather than simply referencing a point in time.

This mix would be a great starting point if you don't know Sickboy's music. Though it doesn't feature many of his own tunes, it includes everything from Bubba Sparxxx to Duran Duran Duran to Disturbed - showing off his ability to slide effortlessly between styles and BPMs.

I don't know very much about Los Destellos, but I've been getting into Cumbia a little recently having read the blog that Sonido Martines contributes to alongside DJ /rupture, La Congona.

Martines, known for his ability to fuse hip hop and funk with latin and cumbia, is based in La Paz, Bolivia and he can always be relied on to take obscure and often old Cumbia tracks and making them very dancefloor-friendly.

Like vampisoul explains:

"The metamorphosis of cumbia turns it into a genre that seems to voraciously cannibalize acoustic traditions and modern technologies. There wasn’t an innovation that tropical guitarists didn’t add to their sound: delay, fuzz tone, overdrive, wahwah, reverb, modulating effects typical of rock bands are assimilated into a stunning sonic cocktail.

"In this context, cumbia reached the top of the charts in popularity. Cumbia replaced rock as the urban sound. The groups would slowly develop an ethnic sensibility inspired by native Shipibo motifs and an astonishing and bewitching sound that seemed to drink from all the mysteries, secrets and myths of the jungle."

When breakcore producers started to put out dubstep records I can't deny I wasn't wary of the results. So when I heard people like Hecq and Matta coming from Ad Noiseam my fears were totally put to rest.

Incorporating a lot of the rave samples of old and new, Hecq bridges the gap between dub and breaks. Expect jarring time signatures, crushing metal rhythms and possibly the heaviest bassline of the year.

It's records like this that make me wish I could DJ. When I listened to 'Sura' it was like listening to that first Bong-Ra or Enduser track when I was 16 thinking: "What in the blue fuck is this?" - and I mean that in the best possible way. No, really.

The b-side 'Tiamat' starts off with an epic soundscape reminscient of those really dark industrial records that Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle used to put out in the late 70s and early 80s. You should only listen to this record through the best speaker system money can buy so you can really feel the bass oscillate and swirl 360 degrees round your head and the snares crash into the bass of your skull.

Mixcloud's Cloudcasts are undoubtedly only as good as the DJs that produce them but their casts of the day are usually pretty consistant in quality. Today is the turn of DJ Premier, someone who has amassed a colossal amount of cool points.

Having produced pretty much all of Gang Starr's tracks as well as tracks for KRS-One, Mos Def, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Nas, M.O.P. and many others, DJ Premier is one of the most respected hip-hop DJs of the 90s.

This mix doesn't stray far from his trademark abrasive scratching, clashing loops and perfect beat-matching that remind of you New York like few others. I'm not sure about some of the tunes he chooses but then I've always been fussy about my hip-hop.

This is literally one of the craziest things I've ever heard and I'm praying it takes off because nothing would make me happier than hearing this in a packed club full of kids too cool to dance. Boom Shakalaka are a DJ/producer collective from Helsinki who combine Baltic/Nordic/Scandinavian folk music with house/funky/electro beats and come up with something that's not as ridiculous as it sounds.

“Having musically been a few times around the world, the Boom Shakalaka team from Finland, has also become more aware of their own musical heritage. The finnish, scandinavian, nordic and baltic region has a rich folk music tradition with nice bouncy accordeon rhythms and beautiful fiddle harmonies. To make this material more suitable for the club, the BSL DJs started making remixes of finnish folk music, which they got some great feedback from. One thing lead to another and finally they realised they have a new genre on their hands, which got the name Baltik Bass, drawing from the musical traditions of the countries around the Baltic Sea. Sounding very much like 'Baba O'Riley' during an aneurysm, 'Escape Velocity' sees The Chemical Brothers attempting grandeur but in the end it turns out to be just a really long song. As did the rest of the album, it bored the arse off me and was so bland and repetitive I found it almost impossible to pay attention to.

'Swoon' also sounds like it's borrowed from somewhere I can't quite place and that made for a really irritating listen. And for some reason all the vocals sound like Snow Patrol, which is awful. Just awful.

The tracks themselves are OK but nothing really stands out and you've forgotten it as soon as you've heard it. 'Snow' is alright, sort of a grower but takes far too long to get going and isn't really that great once you get there.

If you could somehow pass it through a filter that would remove the vocals and then on some of the tracks every single sound (I couldn't even finish the last track), you might end up with a decent electro or house record. Since The Chems decided not to do this it is not a decent electro or house record in the slightest and they are off my Christmas card list.

From Jazzy Jeff through to Josh Wink, Philadelphia has always been a melting pot of creativity and ingenuity within the hip-hop community. As ?uestlove of The Roots points out, New York hip-hop cast such a shadow over the rest of the east coast that Philly DJs had their work cut out from the start and had to be "three times as good" just to make an impression, thus any DJs who did last the distance were exceptionally talented.

Put together by Butch Mayo of Emuwna Filmz and a few other characters, the documentary explores the experiences and exploits of a lot of big names in Philadelphia and also laments the passing of those legendary early years when experimentation was rife - long before the days when Bono and The Edge discussed Josh Wink or rock bands featured DJs more often than hip-hop groups. It also features DJs from around the US citing the unique Philly sound as a huge influence as well as a particularly poignant interview with the late DJ AM who tragically passed away last year.

Three years in the making, there is very little info about the release date but hopefully this teaser should tide you over until then. If not, you can just do as I have and watch it repeatedly until your eyes bleed. It's literally the most fun you can have giving your brain an embolism.

First Devo LP in 20 years!

The re-awakened Devo have announced they will be releasing their ninth studio LP and first since 1990's 'Smooth Noodle Maps', entitled 'Something For Everybody'. The LP is based around the idea that humanity, instead of evolving, is actually regressing - a vision they had 38 years ago in Ohio.

Today they have decided to embrace the homogeneity of the 21st century and embarked on a series of focus group meetings with the modern world designed to satirize their use in market research and radio broadcasting.

One of the singles from the LP 'Fresh' led the focus groups to conclude that "'Fresh' alleviates aches and pains" and "3 out of 5 people would hold 'Fresh' with their feet for more than 3 minutes." It's also a really good song. Best buy it then, really.

New 77 Klash EP out soon

MC for Major Lazer 77 Klash has a new EP produced by Drop The Lime and AC Slater out on Trouble & Bass this week called 'Shadow Of Death'. A video for the title track is on its way.

Ital Tek's second LP out on Planet Mu

Drawing from the IDM end of the dubstep/bass spectrum, Brighton's own Ital Tek returns with his second full length album on Planet Mu. The new LP 'Midnight Colour' sees a slower BPM of just 130 and a more upbeat mood.

The album still retains the dark synths and basic rhythms whilst exploring gentler synth sounds with more bass. There's even some 2-tech-step-whatever on 'Strangelove'. The final track on the album is 'Restless Tundra' which features vocals from Anneka, a rising star in the electronica scene having recorded some amazing tracks with Starkey earlier this year for his second LP.

New Caspa mix on Dub Police

ANOTHER Eels LP you say?

Mark "E" Everett has been a busy chap of late, having recorded his third LP in less than 2 years. The third installment of the audio triptych that began with 'Hombre Lobo' in June last year and 'End Times' in January is to be called 'Tomorrow Morning' and is to be released August 24 this year.

The new album is to be released on Eels' E Works label. In support of the new release there will be a world tour starting in Santa Ana, California, with shows in Japan, Australia, Europe and Canada. The tour will be the first since the release of the trilogy.

Second Dubbel Dutch EP out now on Palms Out!

Following on from last year's Trollsta EP, the long-awaited second EP from Texan producer Dubbel Dutch has finally hit shops. It's attracted a lot of attention in recent months from DJs and bloggers alike. It's a three track EP, with the title track 'Throwback' garnering the most interest.
Incorporating elements of Funky and garage with bassline and house, Dubbel Dutch takes UK music and adds his own unique twist. 'Throwback' stands out with a heavy B'more drum beat and glitchy vocals setting it apart from the majority of the releases at the moment.

The second track 'Deep Underground' starts off as a traditional Funky track before bringing elements of electro and some ravey synths to beef things up. The final track, 'Fool In You' is a dubstep affair with a slight lean towards the junglism a la Burial.

Third ever release on Steak House Records out on July 5th!

Bristol/London-based Steak House Records will be putting out its third 12" at the beginning of July, according to their blog. The new release by Baobinga promises to be a "juicy vocal raggastep" bonanaza with vocals from Killa Benz, Spyda, Rubi Dan and a remix from Ghislain Poirier to sweeten the deal.

No doubt it will be a departure from the bass-oriented Baobinga sound we're used to but as far as I'm concerned, if it's ragga it's right. Also, the inclusion of Spyda is really promising - cementing, as I'm sure he will, the EP's future as memorable at the very least.

The record is due out on July 5th on 12" and digital and they promise to have full previews up on their Soundcloud page very soon. In the mean time you can listen to preview clips of all the tracks on the Steak House Myspace.

New Kanji Kinetic EP on Senseless Records!

Heavy bass purveyor Kanji Kinetic has a new EP out today on Senseless Records, promising a higher tempo of 175 as opposed to the usual 130/140 BPM. The blurb on their Soundcloud page talks about looking back to the old days of rave and jungle, which is always promising.

What I like about Kanji Kinetic is the heaviness he manages to inject into slow club-oriented music, which is becoming an increasingly rare trait these days. It's being released as a split with the New Era EP released on Tigerbeat6 earlier this year but with two new tracks and two remixes from Kaiser and Cracks as well.

Ad Noiseam and Fixt launch Enduser remix contest

Following on from my review of Enduser's 1/3 EP, Ad Noiseam have launched a remix contest for bedroom DJs and producers alike to have a bash at remixing the eponymous track.

"This contest enables anybody to download the soundfiles for this tune, remix it, and submit their own remix, all for free. In two months, Enduser, Ad Noiseam and the Fixt community will vote for the best remixes, the best three receiving prizes from Korg, Fab Filter and Prime Loops."

Kick Out The Jam Radio Volume 1 + JASON FORREST INTERVIEW: "Donna Summer & The Festival of Banged Faces"

Yowzer yowzer yowzer! What a ball-achingly intense week! The first episode of the KOTJ mixtape series has arrived and I'm finally ready to post it along with an interview Mr. Forrest so kindly agreed to.

Last weekend saw me bang my face so vigorously I nearly lost consciousness. Fortunately there were some good points as I managed to hook up with Donna Summer, Kid606 and Chrissy Murderbot (however briefly). Sadly, for one reason or another I missed out on interviews with those two. On the up I did bump into Appleblim just before I left, getting an impromptu interview with him - more on that later.

So tell us a bit about your musical background.
"Well, I don't really have any, technically speaking. I was always really interested in sampling. Public Enemy was always one of the biggest bands for me. Eventually, when everyone had computers in the 90s I was like 'Well, I can do that too!'"

At this point Mr. Nex from Altern8 came over and they begin to discuss their highlights of the festival.
JF (on Bangface): "These guys are so good about attention to detail, like really small things. Last night they turned the AC down a little and it makes it nice and sweaty and a better feeling for the party. I heard them talking about it: 'Well, it’s 10.30 it’s time to reduce the AC a little.' That’s seasoned experience, to know it needs to be warmer by the end of the night.
"I’m trying to talk them into doing a stadium gig. It’d be the best. Make it like fairly cheap, like £10 and just see how many people you could have. Wouldn’t it be cool? 10, 20,000 all for Mr. Nex!"
Mr. Nex: "Them were the days! I can’t use the name Altern8 and I don’t have the rights to the old songs. But I’m doing a cover of Frequency if you’d be up for doing a mix."
JF: "It’d be my honour."

JF: "We met in Berlin. We got them over for a Nightshifters night. They showed up and they were just lovely. I don’t expect anyone to be an asshole at this point. Especially them, they’ve had their highs, they’ve had their lows. The only people that are usually assholes are new, people who have only been around for a year or two and have a lot of NME press and they think they’re really famous but in reality they’re not famous. Those are the people who are total cunts. It’s like “get over yourself”. People who have been around the block like they have are cool."

Some of the new dubstep and bassline DJs are proper arrogant, you can’t even talk to them.
JF: "I don’t even know why. It used to be that the drum & bass scene was full of the most arrogant people ever. I don’t wanna say everybody, but they just had this vibe of “Don’t you know who I am with my celebrity girlfriend giving me drinks while I’m DJing passively” and then somehow that shit moved over to dubstep. A lot of people in the dubstep business are really difficult to deal with; they always demand really high fees for a remix.
"I also find it really funny that some of the dodgier, urban dubstep parties are so gangster. This is basically IDM music and you’re glassing people? I don’t get it."
"So back to the original question, I was really interested in Public Enemy and I had a friend who told me you can make music on computers. Really? You import a sample this way, cut up that way and then for like 3 years I was making really bad Noise music. I couldn’t figure out how to make the music I wanted to make. And that’s when I started Cock Rock Disco. I started it cos I thought it was a really funny name and then as my music got better and I learned about time-stretching I was like 'Oh! That’s how they make all the samples fit together! And not clash all the time!' from there I was running. It’s funny because the music I then went onto make fitted Cock Rock Disco, not as I wanted it to, but that’s just how it evolved naturally. Then over the years - I’ve been around for 10 years, this is my 10th year as a professional musician (which is shocking for everyone, including me) - I just tried to evolve.
"I did Breakcore Gives Me Wood 3, one of the really early ones. We had these Gabba kicks and we knew what this gabba music was but we didn’t really know how to mix it. We were just making all these really fast things but at the time we didn’t really know how to make anything dancey. We were just like 'Isn’t this crazy and extreme and weird?!' In America nobody danced. You just sorta listened to it and stood there and maybe jumped around a little bit cause I’m more from a punk background. Here, you could play a song and people would dance to it. And at Breakcore Gives Me Wood 3 everytime there was a big kick or a drop people were dancing and moving so I would just double it to give it a stronger kick.
"If I’m gonna play at a dance party I’m gonna do a really solid set where people can dance to it. You start to learn and build it up and I’ve got a tonne of Altern8 and those Dance Paradise cassettes, just listening to how real pros make a set, how you really build it. You don’t wanna just push them with a 250bpm for an hour or they get disinterested. So you learn that even a nice high hat drop can have a major impact when that comes in right. Then I started to make a lot of dance music. Then about 4 years ago when electro started to get more interesting, I started doing more electro parties in Berlin. We made a Birthday Party for everyone and no-one and they we started making more electro things and that’s kinda where we are now. Basically, I do club music and then I do super extreme rave music and nothing in between. It’s like ass-shaking girl stuff and then going for broke breakcore."

With the music you make under your own name, it’s not as dancey, some of it’s more introspective, some of it’s rockier, some of it’s disco. Is that still going?
"It is gonna still go. Basically, there is a third wheel and that’s the Jason Forrest stuff. My last Jason Forrest record was in 2005 so it’s been 5 years. In that time I’ve moved to Berlin, got involved with more parties. Then about 2 years ago I saw that that musicality was missing from my stuff. Sometimes you learn a way of doing things and you can’t unlearn that. So for a long time I just couldn’t get the spark back over music. Last year I started on a new album. I’m pretty close to being done with it. It’s really changed. It’s very prog-rocky, really musical, there’s a lot of chord changes. But the thing that’s funny is that the structures are way more stripped down. If you listen to post-disco crash there’s a song where there’s like 5 different sequenced drums at the same time. There’s something about that over complexity that's really exciting. Whereas on this record I have maybe 4 total drum sounds. It’s much cleaner and much more direct but also i think it depends what you wanna do but for me it’s about delivering the music a bit more clearly. So I’m quite close, I’m not 100% and there’s an internal struggle of 'how do i finish this album?'. I’m also trying to do some new things with the club music as well and i have a baby now – he’s fantastic, I love him to death, obviously, says the father. So now my time is getting to be tight and running the labels. So I get 2 hours and I’m like 'Do I finish this remix or do I do the Jason forrest stuff? I really wanna do this new club tune I got a feeling for, well I've really gotta do some finessing on this music.'
"So everything slows down but im still doing a lot of stuff. I hope to have it out this year. It’s called ‘The Everything’ and it’s a lot of styles. There’s a lot more snap percussion and it’s like proggy, with a no-wave feel to it. There’s a lot of distorted bits. But then it’s also kinda light, there’s some rockabilly parts in it. I’ve only given some bits and pieces to some friends and they really liked it."

You say the Jason forrest stuff is a bit of a third wheel. Do you think that applies to breakcore and hardcore generally?
"I think the issue is that there’s a bit of a crisis within breakcore. It’s certainly not anything that’s happened lately. Basically there was a big schism. First it was just breakcore and then it became light breakcore and dark breakcore and then from there I think everyone who was making breakcore have gone off in 4 tangents, or 3 tangents and a 4th category: some went metal like Drumcorps, or electro like Sickboy and myself or like dubstep like the Wrong crew. Or even like Squires of Gothos, a prime example of a breakcore-head who made dubstep that’s kinda close to breakcore. There’s amens and stuff. It’s different but it’s not 250bpm, it’s 140, 150 and that’s still plenty hard, especially in a dancefloor set. But then there’s this 4th category, this newer second generation who’ve come up who basically make breakcore on forums and that stuff’s really interesting, I really wanna support it more. But at the same time they’re such a different community from a different standpoint where they have all of those things mashed up into a 1 minute song.
"There were some people in the past who made breakcore and moved onto other things and some of them were ok with the transition but some were like 'No, we’re not doing breakcore'. Thing is, I love it. I feel like I had some hand in establishing it so I still love playing the tunes and I still like making the tunes but the spark’s not there after 10 years so much as it was. That said, I’m definitely not stopping. Panther Tracks is only 2 years old and I played 4 tracks from it last night.

So where do you see music going in the future?
"I guess the issue, as a musician, is you don’t really know. The one thing I’ve learned over my ups and downs is: first of all, I’m still amazed I’m still here 10 years later. I really thought I had an album or 2 in me and then I'd have to go get a job again. That’s not to say I had low expectations, but I was realistic. So over the years I’ve tried some things that really worked and some that maybe didn’t work so well. You have to follow what you’re interested in. So that’s why I'm not really sure. The club music’s going really well, Nightshifters is really kicking off. I'm totally committed to it and I’m really excited by the artists on there. Things have really taken a turn for the better.
"It could be that the Nightshifters thing really kicks off and I do more of that because that’s where I need to focus my energy, or it could be that that doesn’t kick off so much and the Jason Forrest stuff does what it does and I follow that path. The point is over the years I've started little paths then had to stop them and come back to some later. Now I'm at a really good spot where I'm making the music I want to make. Granted it can be for this audience or that audience but I really like both of those paths and I'm doing it for me. Sometimes you think 'Well, if I put this structure together with this they’ll like it more' and I just got to this point where I’m not doing that anymore. Like 'I know it’s only supposed to have 16 bars but if i do 15 bars and then this massive drop' and playing around with the rules and not just following the rules but trying to push the rules. So that's where I am now and I have to say I'm super pleased with everything and really on top of the world these days.
"In some part it’s down to blogs like your own because traditional media's not so easy anymore and there's always new people interested in your music. With every new movement and new crew of people that show up there’s always something that pushes me to try to push them back."

So what are the plans for nightshifters in the future?
"Basically, Nightshifters is an experiment. It’s an experiment in business, it’s an experiment in art. I'm really not interested in following anyone. I’m not interested in being an Ed Banger junior or an Institubes junior or a Trouble & Bass junior. I wanna do a label that has its own identity, that has its own vision. Yeah, we’ve got friends but you wanna do your own thing and we’re doing it. What’s cool is it’s going really strong. Last month with the Rx release we had 19,000 views on the Vimeo page in a month and that’s real numbers."

And Radio 1 are picking it up.
"It’s great. I'd like to reach out to some of those dudes a bit more like Annie Mac and Kissy Sell Out but I’ve had nothing. We’ll get there. Obviously, Hostage did the Essential mix with Annie Mac so that’s coming along too.
"The next release is by Proper Villains and it’s really solid. There’s a lot of breaks on it, some really wobbly bassy stuff. Quite housey and one of the songs has a really old-school ravey piano breakdown. I wanted to play it in my set last night, it’s just slow for Bangface.
"After that we’re gonna do a mini best of release in the summer. Then after that we have new releases from Rampage and Rob Threezy. There’s some new artists we’re trying to get from the States and a guy from France.
"The thing about Nightshifters is it’s digital only and I try to keep it really fast moving. When we get a track sent we get it mastered in a few days, then we send it away and it comes out a month later. It used to be that it took a year to release something, now we can get it out in 6 weeks. So we don’t wanna schedule too much stuff in case something new comes in you have to jump on it now now now! So that’s what the Rx was, something just happened and we were just like 'Shit! Let’s go go go!' and that was a free one so we didn’t have to worry about the digital stores or anything, we just got it and ran."

Which artists have you got your eye on at the minute?
"Artistically, there’s a lot of people I get inspiration from; there’s a lot of people i would love to work with, they just have other commitments. Dubbel Dutch is really great, he’s flipping some UK sounds with some US ghetto stuff and it really works. And he’s a nice guy too. He did a remix for us for the Momma’s Boy that just came out. There’s so many people right now, so much really incredible UK stuff. The Night Slugs posse totally rip it up. The new Girl Unit album is mindblowingly good. I’m totally into the Bok Bok stuff. But then there’s this new kid from Canada called Samo Soundboy, he’s quite fresh, making really good tracks, really clean air-pressure music, lots of weird woosh sounds – it’s like gases are filling the club!
"But then as far as inspiration, I think Untold is the dude. When you hear those Untold tracks they’re so fucking weird and so hard but there’s nothing there. It’s like a cowbell, a woodblock, a highhat and some reactor patch and that’s the tune but it’s so beautifully produced. He’s incredible. I have a lot of inspiration from that weird IDM dubstep stuff. There’s tonnes of stuff, I could go on for hours. We have a guy in Berlin called Naifian who makes a little techno, a little dubstep, a lot of really weird sounds and I wanna do something with him as well. We just gotta work it out.
"So basically with Nightshifters I’m trying to push it a little deeper and harder. I keep telling the people I want more with less. We’re not making headphone music, it’s gotta bang. You gotta be able to pogo to that shit. I want some new sounds. You wanna make a night where people can have a really good experience. If it’s just all that sidechain electro it gives you a fucking headache after a while. More with less!"

I have to say Donna Summer appears to be doing his damnedest to make my like Funky, and to be honest he's winning. Before now all I'd heard was the really lazy RnB-soaked asinine crap. If you're not sure about funky, listen to his remix of Momma's Boy's new single 'At Night' - it's definitely one of the highlights of the mix with really old-skool rave vocals over a genuinely danceable beat.

New AC Slater single on Trouble & Bass!

Trouble & Bass stalwart AC Slater has been rather busy of late. His new single 'Take You' with Ninjasonik has been released along with his contribution to the T&B Smashcast series and his mix for Mishka.

I met him briefly at Bangface and drunkenly arranged an interview that never happened, but I can at least vouch that he is a good egg - however hammered he was that night.

His new tune 'Take You' draws together elements of funky, house, bassline and even a touch of grime. Oh, and there's a lovely little piano breakdown reminiscent of Jason Tyler's 'Run Around' from a couple of years ago.

The video was directed and produced by T&B's very own Patrick 'The Captain' Rood, and Edited/DPed by Matt Canada of Control Alt Media. The remixes come from Drop The Lime, Nadastrom, Lee Mortimer and a host of others!
