The marvellous Shy FX released 'Raver' quite some time ago but just recently, the whole release has been made available for free.

The video for 'Raver' features a bewildering number of cameos ranging from AC Slater to Peter Waterman. It's almost a game in itself, spotting people. The tune itself features Kano, Donae'o and Roses Gabor (of Gorillaz fame) as well as a whole host of remixes from the likes of Breakage, Benny Page and the mighty MJ Cole.

New DJ Hidden record!

DJ Hidden
'The Words Below - Limited Edition Vinyl Series Vol. 3'
Ad Noiseam [adn124]
12" / digital

First of all, I'm genuinely excited about this: a new release by DJ Hidden on Ad Noiseam. Continuing his 'Words Below' series, DJ Hidden has dropped the third and final edition of the series with his partner in crime from The Outside Agency, Eye-D, featuring two remixes of tracks from his album of the same name.

His first album, 2007's 'The Later After' was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and fans alike. His sophomore effort would therefore have to be something pretty damned sexual. Fortunately, he hasn't disappointed and continues to fire out some of the darkest, most thoughtful beats and breaks this side of Starkville.

Like Starkey, this album is more than just a collection of songs - the tracks run together with an indeterminate flow that demonstrates a surprising flare for storytelling that is so very lost in today's music. This remix series features great reinterpretations but it's the originals that really shine. There's also a slight feeling that these remixes seem somewhat disjointed from their original setting - like watching Empire Strikes Back on its own. There still worth a listen, it's just that you're left expecting something when it finishes.

These tracks are exclusive to this 12" so grab the crap out of it while you can! Failing that, a digital version is available at Ad Noiseam for a tiny wee amount that you'll barely notice. At the time of writing there were no tracks available for posting, but here's a couple of samples to whet your collective appetite:

Junglist Massive Inna Di Place

Some kind soul on the interwebs has dug out an old BBC2 documentary about jungle (seriously.) from 1994. The sound quality isn't great but it's pretty good given how old it is. It features some pretty interesting footage of Shy FX and Gunsmoke recording 'Gangster'.

It's also pretty interesting to see how jungle influenced drum & bass and then dubstep and now even UK funky. Basically, this is the golden age of jungle; although there was a revival a few years ago with people like RCola and Paulie Waulnuts. It really is a shame what happened to jungle and drum & bass after this documentary was made.

The documentary marks the period that jungle purists consider to be the point where jungle went bad; the beats got slower, the synths got dancier and eventually you got Dillinja. Before that, however, ragga jungle really kicked off in the UK with people like Tenor Fly, Shy FX and General Levy all doing incredibly well from the surge in interest.

If you're not sure how big this was, it was as big as dubstep is now and it went the same way dubstep will probably go. The documentary itself was clearly made to mark the ascension of jungle drum & bass, but unfortunately it ended up chronicling the end of the genre. Still, it's really funny to see people like Shy FX and Gunsmoke as little whipper snappers trying to explain jungle.

And as a little yuletide treat, here's a classic jungle tune from that era:
