Night Slugs to release first anniversary comp

For a record label that's barely a year old Night Slugs has already amassed an impressive back catalogue of stand out releases in the heavy bass/UK funky scenes: Lil Silva's 'Night Skanker' EP, Mosca's 'Square One' and 'Wut' by Girl Unit to name but a few.

To celebrate their first birthday they'll be putting out a compilation LP of Night Slugs classics from Girl Unit, Mosca and Kingdom as well as some unreleased tracks from Optimum and an unheard collaboration between L-Vis 1990 and T. Williams.

The new LP, entitled 'Night Slugs AllStars Vol. 1', is out November 29th and is sure to make the ideal place start if you don't really know the label. Check out the tracklist below.

New Nic Sarno tune for download!

I'm a bit late getting to this one but it comes via several members of the Grindin team. Evidently influenced by the emerging Angolan/Portugese/Latin beats, Nic Sarno takes on a style championed by Bok Bok, MIA and Buraka Som Sistema to name just three.

I really hope there's more of this to come, it's really refreshing to see someone go a different direction. Especially when it's instead of Funky.

DJ Donna Summer - Raw EP

Just as 2006 belonged to electro, 2007 and 2008 to dubstep, and 2009 to bassline, so too will 2010 belong to UK Funky. So what better way to kick off the year in funky (even though it's March, for fuck's sake) than to review DJ Donna Summer's first release on Nightshifters in 2 years?

I wouldn't say I'm a convert yet, but the possibilities within the genre have been opened up to me. Tracks like 'Wood' remind me of the old glitchy records that tigerbeat6 used to put out back in the day. The percussion-oriented tracks seem to allow for more irregular time signatures, which is encouraging, but the RnB element that never seems to die still exists in funky. Which is gay.

You can always rely on Donna Summer to do something exciting with a genre or style of music. Hopefully, the jungle element will come to the fore and BPMs will go up again. He's bagged a good bunch of producers for remix duties as well: Noise Floor Crew and Hostage deliver as expected, and Bok Bok delivers what some are describing as his best tune yet, but Sonido Del Principe are the surprising little gem with a Cumbia-inspired take on Funky.

Debut Kingdom single out today!

Kingdom's long awaited debut single 'Mind Reader' has finally been released on Fool's Gold after months of teasing remixes. It features Shyvonne on vocals and has a banging b-side in the shape of 'You'.

New Little Jinder Remix EP!

I'm a bit late getting to this but Trouble & Bass staple, Little Jinder, has a new remix EP of Youth Blood out today yesterday. The EP comes with remixes by 12th Planet & Finch, Sharkslayer, Bok Bok, Rico Tubbs, Chateau LaTeuf and The Squire Of Gothos. The original is a really chilled synthy bit of electro, sort of like The Knife but more like being cuddled by Björk. In a good way, of course. If anyone remembers her first single 'Polyhedron' (which was perfectly remixed by Supra1) you'll know she has a really beautiful voice and her productions knock the shit out of the others'.

Trouble & Bass is putting out some really amazing records at the minute. If you haven't heard of them, you probably don't get out much. It's owned by Drop The Lime and is absolutely DOMINATING the New York electro/bassline/dubstep scene (and now the UK too).
