The LP boasts a broad range of styles: from House to Bassline to Funky to Baltimore as well as the vocal talents of B'more star Rye Rye and Londoners Katy B and Bashy.

KOTJ Radio | Episode 4: Dev79

Another exciting podcast comes to us from Philadelphia resident Gair "Dev79" Marking. Starkey and he control Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey with El Carnicero.

Dev79 has been bangin’ out the underground sounds for years. I first heard his music back in the days when he was producing harsh noise-influenced hip-hop and breaks on the Sonic Terror imprint. Today his music retains the hip-hop and glitch influences along with a new dub and heavy bass streak.

His recent remixes for Gobs The Zombie, Guttstar, Dmn Days are sure to raise his profile and jettison him into the stratosphere. I'm told he's currently working on a collaborative EP with Seattle producer Thrills (of Sub Philo Music/Thrills & Tony Rocky Horror fame) with a new EP out on Seclusiasis called 'Live N Die 4 The Street Bass', coming in September.

Tracklist:

01. BD1982 - Trails (Gunhead Remix)
02. Siyoung - Kill Whitey
03. Scratcha DVA - New World Order
04. Dev79 - Live N Die 4 The Street Bass (Harlsedon Riddim)
05. Kanji Kinetic - Thrill Seeka
06. Guttstar - Bomb Blast (Dev79 Remix)
07. Chelley - Text Message (SonicC Remix)
08. CRST - The Bells (Girl Unit Remix)
09. Hybu - How To Look Primative
10. Skinny Friedman - Hundred Dollar Salad (Sammy Bananas Remix)
11. The Constellations - Setback (Starkey Remix)
12. Shawty Lo - Say Yeah
13. Starkey - Death Beams
14. Om Unit - Searching (EAN Remix)
15. +Verb - Puddleglum

EXCLUSIVE new Dev79 tune!

Wow, I'm really excited about this one! A little while ago our good friend Dev79 agreed to do a mix for the radio series and as a cheeky little gift sent me his new tune 'Riddim Of The Night'.

At the time I was told to keep it on the ol' hush-hush say-no-more, but now I'm finally allowed to share it with you in all it's exclusive glory! You won't hear this version ANYWHERE else as it's been remixed and re-edited with different vocals for the release of the upcoming EP.

So to tide you over until his awesome mix comes out, here it is. Enjoy it and tell your friends!

New AC Slater single on Trouble & Bass!

Trouble & Bass stalwart AC Slater has been rather busy of late. His new single 'Take You' with Ninjasonik has been released along with his contribution to the T&B Smashcast series and his mix for Mishka.

I met him briefly at Bangface and drunkenly arranged an interview that never happened, but I can at least vouch that he is a good egg - however hammered he was that night.

His new tune 'Take You' draws together elements of funky, house, bassline and even a touch of grime. Oh, and there's a lovely little piano breakdown reminiscent of Jason Tyler's 'Run Around' from a couple of years ago.

The video was directed and produced by T&B's very own Patrick 'The Captain' Rood, and Edited/DPed by Matt Canada of Control Alt Media. The remixes come from Drop The Lime, Nadastrom, Lee Mortimer and a host of others!

Second Starkey single from 'Ear Drums & Black Holes'

If there's one artist who continues to surprise me and exceed my expectations it's Starkey. His new single 'Stars' (out March 8th on Planet Mu), featuring Anneka on vocals is taken from the forthcoming album 'Ear Drums & Black Holes' (out April 19th) and builds on the brilliance of his debut.

The title track 'Stars' is a very laidback, almost housey affair with an ethereal tint. Slugabed's remix, however, really adds something the original lacks, bringing out the bassy noisiness and launching it in to more club-friendly territory. Clearly, Kieran "Four Tet" Hebden is an influence on Geissinger as the fluttering synths and gentle melodies mark a more introverted departure from the snare-heavy grime of olde.

That's not to say Starkey has abandoned heavy bass music, the b-side 'Starting Gates' sees him create what can only be described as "drillstep". The grimey, arpeggiated synths made famous on his first LP risk getting lost in the rest of the layers at times but this arguably only adds to the bass-heavy thump of it.

This is a date you should really mark in your diary because it might just be better than 'Ephemeral Exhibits'. And with any luck it'll mark the demise of that godawful subgenre "ravestep".

While you wait, tuck into this preview he posted on his Soundcloud page:

"Give Me A Tissue In Case Of Mess..."

I know this is unbelievably ancient in the grand scheme of the internets, but it's still hilarious and really pokes fun at badly made grime. South East Londoners, Red Hot Entertainment comprise Gracious K, Jaxor, J Formula, Kabir, Klayze Flaymez, Terra Kid, X Ray. They don't seem to be doing anything anymore and the rest of the stuff on their MySpace isn't that great but this tune is still hilarious, and I'm 90% sure they're kidding.

Starkey Raving Mad

Just when you thought he'd outdone himself with 'Gutter Music', along comes Starkey's new single, 'Capsule'. The track comes from his second full length album, 'Ear Drums And Black Holes' and is due out on March 16th on Planet Mu.

What sets Starkey apart from other dubstep producers is he never shys away from layers and complexity, even at his grimiest. If you can imagine dubstep having come from the post-apocalyptic nightmare that is Ghost In The Machine, that's pretty much how Starkey sounds.

Hailing from Philadelphia, Paul "Starkey" Geissinger began making techy-dubstep back in 2005, a whole 2 years before it was cool to like dubstep, especially in the U.S. Since then, he's gone from strength to strength with releases on Planet Mu, Peace Off sublabel Ruff, Dead Homies and his own label Slit Jockey.
